Middle-Ground Trade Policies with China: Essential for Global Growth
Trade relations between the West and China are deteriorating, particularly with a potential Trump administration. Protectionism harms ASEAN’s growth; a balanced approach to trade with China is needed for prosperity.
Deteriorating Trade Relations
Trade relations between the West and China are increasingly strained, particularly with the anticipated second Trump administration in the United States. This rise in protectionism could hinder economic growth for ASEAN member states. A more balanced approach—protecting essential supply chains in key sectors while simultaneously fostering trade with China—could enhance prosperity for all, especially within ASEAN.
Escalating Tensions
Recent developments point to a negative turn in global economic relations. The European Union is implementing new protectionist trade measures in tandem with a protectionist U.S. administration. In late November 2024, Trump targeted China for massive tariff increases, while the Biden administration announced broader export restrictions on advanced chip technologies—a move that swiftly elicited a response from Beijing.
ASEAN’s Strategic Positioning
Amid this evolving landscape, ASEAN countries are strategically balancing their economic relationships between China and the United States. They must navigate their member states’ growing protectionism without damaging their own industries. Concerns over excessive tariffs were echoed by industry leaders, such as BMW’s CEO, warning that such measures could jeopardize European competitiveness and harm their industrial sectors in the long run.
