On October 26, 2025, Thailand and Cambodia signed a Joint Peace Statement to resolve a border conflict, with U.S. presence. China claimed significant mediation involvement, revealing contrasting approaches between the U.S. and China.

Thailand and Cambodia’s Joint Peace Statement

On 26 October 2025, Thailand and Cambodia signed a Joint Peace Statement to address a renewed border conflict, witnessed by the United States through President Donald Trump. Notably absent was China, which later claimed to have played a significant role in mediating the crisis. President Xi Jinping’s comments aimed to clarify China’s involvement and highlight its contributions to the resolution.

Background of the Conflict

The conflict escalated dramatically on 24 July 2025, when a military clash erupted along the Thailand-Cambodia border, resulting in at least 38 fatalities and displacing over 300,000 people. In response, Malaysia, as the ASEAN chair, organized a meeting on 28 July that brought together Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, resulting in an initial ceasefire.

Mediation Efforts and Foreign Influence

The complexities of regional governance were highlighted by ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, who noted that the sudden escalation surprised the organization. Although ASEAN set the stage for dialogue, the ceasefire’s effectiveness hinged on external support, particularly from China and the U.S. Their differing approaches—political pressure by Washington versus low-profile diplomacy by Beijing—illustrate the challenges Southeast Asian states face amidst growing global power dynamics.
