In September, China observed two pivotal commemorative events: Victory over Japan Day on September 3 and Martyrs’ Day on September 30. These occasions pay tribute to the sacrifices and triumphs of China’s tumultuous past, reflecting values that Beijing believes are crucial for achieving its long-term aspirations of national rejuvenation.
Honoring National Heroes
As part of its nation-building strategy, China is working to internationalize its historiography and collective memory. This includes updating its narrative around national heroes and martyrs, supported by new legislation. The initiative highlights the contributions of younger, peacetime heroes, such as first responders and healthcare professionals, ultimately fostering a sense of patriotism and societal cohesion.
Globalizing Commemoration Efforts
China’s campaign extends beyond its borders, honoring overseas martyrs who have contributed to major projects abroad. Chinese embassies are actively engaged in identifying these individuals and organizing memorials. Currently, over 300 memorial facilities exist across more than 50 countries, commemorating upwards of 110,000 Chinese martyrs, indicating a significant phase in China’s effort to globalize its commemoration landscape.
