China Fuels the Future of Global AI Innovation
Shanghai hosted the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) from July 4-6, 2024, showcasing over 500 AI products and highlighting China’s progress, global leadership, and commitment to inclusive AI development.
Shanghai Hosts the World Artificial Intelligence Conference
Shanghai, China’s center for humanoid robotics, gained international recognition by hosting the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) from July 4–6, 2024. Following its inception in 2018, shortly after an AI system triumphed over a Go champion, the WAIC has spotlighted China’s impressive advancements in artificial intelligence. This year’s conference attracted over 1,300 officials, industry leaders, and scientists from 50 countries, with 500 companies showcasing cutting-edge AI innovations.
A Dominantly Chinese Event
While the conference showcased AI’s evolution and the growing competition in the field, the attendance was predominantly Chinese, with only a few global giants like Qualcomm and Tesla represented. Although some researchers from the Global South participated, Chinese exhibitors dominated the exposé, underscoring a significant geographical imbalance in representation.
Global AI Governance and Collaboration
The WAIC also featured a High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance that produced the Shanghai Declaration, wherein China committed to promoting safe AI development and fostering North-South cooperation. This move aims to bridge the technological gap between regions, yet the limited participation from the Global South hinted at a more China-centric narrative. By positioning itself as a leader in global AI governance, China intends to align its initiatives with the aspirations of developing nations while showcasing its advancements in embodied intelligence systems.
