China’s Renewable Energy Growth and Grid Challenges
China’s remarkable progress in renewable energy over the past two decades is a significant achievement, yet policymakers are increasingly focused on the infrastructure necessary to integrate these renewables into the existing power grid. The transition to sustainable energy sources has revealed challenges in grid stabilization, particularly as demand and supply dynamics evolve. If not adequately addressed, these challenges could hinder further advancements in renewable energy and decarbonisation efforts.
The impact of China’s Renewable Energy Law, enacted in 2005, is evident as clean energy sectors like solar, electric vehicles, and lithium batteries contributed 10% to the GDP by 2024. Notably, China has the largest share of global installed solar capacity and substantial wind capabilities. However, as the share of non-hydro renewables in total energy generation surged from under 2% to 18% between 2005 and 2024, new energy infrastructure demands emerged, particularly from small-scale and distributed energy projects.
As China implements its 15th Five Year Plan and responds to rising global power demands, the necessity for modernized energy infrastructure becomes critical. With wind and solar capacities experiencing significant growth—18% and 45% year-on-year in 2024—policymakers are tasked with balancing this expansion with grid stability. While curtailment rates have improved, a relaxing of limits raises concerns, emphasizing the ongoing need for strategic planning to ensure the continued success of China’s renewable energy future.
