Japan business leaders met with China’s Vice Premier to discuss expanding trade, easing export restrictions, and ensuring Japanese citizens’ safety. They emphasized maintaining free and fair trade.

Japan Seeks Trade Expansion with China

Japan’s business leaders are urging the Chinese government to bolster trade ties, focusing on lifting the ban on Japanese seafood imports and relaxing restrictions on rare earth metal exports. On a visit to Beijing, the Japan-China Economic Association engaged in talks with Vice Premier He Lifeng, who holds significant sway over economic policy.

Promoting Free and Fair Trade

Vice Premier Lifeng expressed optimism that the visit could enhance trade not only between China and Japan but also with other nations, despite growing protectionism. Tokura Masakazu, Chairman of the Japan Business Federation, emphasized that the economic growth of both countries hinges on free and fair trade, underlining each nation’s vital role in sustaining the international rules-based order.

Ensuring Safety and Stability

Highlighting the need for secure and stable business operations, Tokura called on the Chinese government to protect Japanese citizens and create a transparent business environment. After the meeting, he stated their hopes to limit export restrictions to those necessary for national security. Tokura requested the Vice Premier to convey these concerns to Premier Li Qiang and President Xi Jinping.
