Key Points

  • UOB Appointment: UOB has named Tan Choon Hin Head of ASEAN and Greater China, effective September 2026, to enhance regional connectivity and support UOB’s ambition to lead in ASEAN. Tan will lead business operations across Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, and Taiwan, focusing on long-term growth and collaboration.

  • Role and Impact: Tan will oversee UOB’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Advisory unit, connecting businesses with industry networks to foster cross-border expansion. With over 30 years in banking and risk management, Tan’s expertise supports leadership transformation and strategic goals of capturing trade and investment flows between ASEAN and Greater China.

  • UOB Goals: The new role aligns with UOB’s strategy to leverage ASEAN as a key economic hub, capitalizing on trade and investment opportunities. Under Tan’s leadership, UOB aims to unlock revenue opportunities, strengthen regional connections, and facilitate customer growth amidst evolving supply chains and economic ties.

UOB has appointed Tan Choon Hin as the Head of ASEAN and Greater China, effective from 1 September 2026, aiming to enhance regional connectivity, boost cross-border business prospects, and assert its position as the leading bank in ASEAN. Tan, previously the Deputy Chief Risk Officer at UOB, will now manage the bank’s operations across Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, mainland China, and additionally oversee branches in Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan.

In his expanded role, Tan will also lead the bank’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Advisory unit, which assists businesses in connecting with industry networks and partners to facilitate cross-border expansion. Tan will report directly to Wee Ee Cheong, UOB’s Deputy Chairman and CEO, and will become part of the Management Executive Committee. He will work collaboratively with country CEOs and management teams across seven regional markets to foster long-term growth and explore new revenue avenues.

Against the backdrop of rising foreign investment in ASEAN, with FDI to the region doubling in the past decade amidst a global decline, UOB’s ongoing leadership transformation aligns with its strategy to harness the growing trade, investment, and wealth flows between ASEAN and Greater China. Over the last six months alone, UOB’s FDI Advisory unit has facilitated over 300 cross-border expansion plans, involving projected investments of S$5.6 billion.

With over 30 years of experience in banking and risk management across ASEAN and Greater China, Tan joined UOB in 2012 and has held various senior positions, including the Chief Executive Officer of UOB Thailand, where he significantly expanded the bank’s footprint. Since returning to Singapore in 2024, Tan has strengthened the bank’s risk management and governance frameworks.

Wee Ee Cheong emphasized that ASEAN’s growing significance as a global economic hub is central to UOB’s strategy, with the bank committed to leveraging emerging opportunities in trade and investment flows between ASEAN and Greater China. Through this appointment, UOB seeks to fortify its regional connections and empower customers to benefit from shifting supply chains and increasing economic ties, positioning itself as a leader in the ASEAN banking sector.
